Not a bad place to spend a Friday morning -- The Salt Flats

MAIN PHOTO

This was the next morning after we shot the John and Maree's engagments. I got up early to get some good landscape shots of the Salt Flats. I like my job.
This was taken with my phone camera for quick uploading. Fat lot of good THAT did.

Allison & Dave - Salt Lake Temple and The 23rd Floor

MAIN PHOTO

Okay. So this one happened a while ago--actually before I started blogging but I've been wanting to post it for a long time. The ceremony was at the Salt Lake LDS temple and the reception was at the 23rd Floor, which, incidentally, no longer hosts receptions--it's a shame, it was really a cool view of the city.
Allison and David were so much fun to work with despite being cold it was a beautiful day.

John & Maree - Engagements on the Bonneville Salt Flats

MAIN PHOTO

I'm so excited to finally post these! We went out to the Salt Flats in Utah's West Desert with certain expectations. As seems to always happen, nature had something totally different in mind. Instead of a calm, blue sky type of day we got wind, wind, and more wind. The sky was blue one minute. then yellow or black the next. To their credit, John and Maree just went with it and had a good time. It turned out to be a bit of a waste of money for the hair stylist as that was ruined the second Maree stepped out of the car but the wind made for dynamic, fun, stylized photos and in the end, that's the goal anyway, isn't it?
We brought a whole bunch of water balloons in their wedding colors as well as a candlelight picnic. We used the balloons but couldn't get the picnic set up in the wind. Most of the time I used either one off-camera speedlight on a stand or totally natural light. You'll notice the point at the end when I added a second speedlight with a small honeycomb grid as an accent light.
This shoot has a much more commercial feel than most of what I've done before. It seems to be a trend in the way I've been shooting lately. (See Ixchels' Bridals)
I had a hard time cutting down the numbers so it's a big gallery. I hope you like them!

The Utah DJ Association

A few weeks ago I had the great pleasure of speaking to the Utah Disc Jockey Association about how DJs and photographers can better communicate and help each other achieve their objectives. It was very informative on both sides as well as being a whole lot of fun!

MAIN PHOTO

It was very cool that two of the DJs that I had used as examples of outstanding DJs also happened to be in attendance! (Interesting that the ones I used as BAD examples were nowhere to be seen...you can see the value of the association.) I'm always very impressed with anyone who takes it upon themselves to join organizations and use the advice of others to progress.
Ironically, I forgot to get a picture of the whole group so we took it with those who hung out to chat for a bit afterward.

For those of you looking for a DJ, I recommend you hire someone who is a member of the UDJA, they are really doing great things! So keep an eye out for the UDJA logo when looking for a DJ to MC your shin-dig.

A Proud Parental Moment

MAIN PHOTO

We were at a wedding in Manti, Utah this weekend and I was taking a break to eat something. Hannah started pushing the "Live View" button on my camera. I didn't mind because it doesn't have much of a chance to mess anything up. I leaned into the frame so she could see me on the screen and snap...she took her first photo! I had my second camera on the radio flash system so I used it to take some pictures of Hannah taking pictures.
Every parent secretly wants their kids to be interested in the same things they are. You can't reasonably expect it but I think we all have a repressed desire to force our children to follow in our footsteps. (Some of us repress it better than others.) I'm hoping these pictures are an indication of things to come...don't tell anyone I was smiling.

Ixchel - Bridals

MAIN PHOTO

Ixchel won our free shoot at the Thanksgiving Point wedding show in January. It worked out well for her since she is in Utah currently but getting married in Arizona. She has a photographer down there to cover the wedding but needed someone up her to shoot her bridals. She wanted a high-fashion look so that's what we went for. I found out quickly that she didn't need my help to strike the pose and go all vogue. I just let her do her thing.

Quinceanera Portraits -- Diana

MAIN PHOTO

Today, perhaps something different...how about a fun, crazy, sassy, beautiful birthday girl?
Diana is going to have her quinceanera on August 21st. For her portrait session we went to several locations in American Fork. She loves vintage cars so that's where we started. With Diana's family and friends along in tow we had a great time and got some really amazing images. Diana was very easy to photograph and you can bet she breaks hearts on a regular basis.
